[ first tryout of the project #underwavesoceanstaysstill ]
Lately, like many other artists, I’ve been pondering the role of art in these turbulent times. After World War II, our society learned a lot, but did it truly learn anything? Who is humanity: someone who destroys and annihilates, or someone who can create something beautiful?
The project’s name refers to Buddhist meditations and the concept that the mind is like an ocean: on the surface, there can be a storm, but beneath the waves, the water remains still. This belief leads to the idea of self-awareness: if we can understand ourselves, we can better understand others, communicate, engage in dialogue, and share more love. The concept of the concert is not against anything but for love, peace, and communication.
Free improvisation is a vibrant form of music resembling a conversation. The musical texture evolves in the moment and never repeats. A free improvisation ensemble is a place where people from different countries and cultures come together, along with unexpected instrument combinations—electronics, Dan Bao, harpsichord, percussion, folk instruments, prepared piano, jazz singing, folk singing, dance, and much more. And it works wonderfully.
One could say that this art form has a healing effect, and we want to share that with others.
