Composed and improvised music in Bohlen–Pierce tuning. Dong Zhou: found violin, objects & electronics; Elena Khurgina: harpsichord & sensors

Listening Session #3: Microtonal Flowers
An evening of microtonal music: new compositions and free improvisation.

Performers:
Dong Zhou: found violin, electronics
Elena Khurgina: Bohlen–Pierce harpsichord, IMU sensors

This Listening Session explores the unusual sound world of the Bohlen–Pierce scale, a 13-step, non-octave tuning system based on the tritave (3:1 frequency ratio), with a particular emphasis on odd-numbered frequency ratios.
The programme features Prooemium praeter rem by Yuri Akbalkan, a composition for Bohlen–Pierce harpsichord, IMU sensors and electronics.
We will also premiere Dancable Bohlen-Pierce Music, for Shimo, a new composition by Manfred Stahnke for violin and harpsichord, written especially for this concert, alongside improvised music for found violin and electronics.
